The National Kapodistrian University of Athens is one of the major higher degree public educational institutions in Greece. The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications belongs to the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Department staff consists of 42 academic staff members and over 100 PhD candidates and research associates. The faculty, research staff and students participate in a large number of projects of national and international scale, funded by programmes such as RACE, ACTS, TELEMATICS, DELTA, ESPRIT II & III, IST, RISI. The department has a rich and long experience in several topics of Computer Science such as Software Engineering, Databases and Knowledge Bases; Experiment Management Systems; Workflow Management Systems; Digital Libraries; User Interfaces; Personalization and Usage Statistics; Data Warehouses; Data Mining; and Distributed Systems and has participated in several relevant research and development projects. Those funded during the last five years include the DILIGENT IP (IST FP6), DIAS (eContent), DELOS Network of Excellence (IST FP6), BRICKS Integrated Project (IST FP6), KATOPTRON (under a Greek initiative), DRIVER (IST FP6), DRIVER-II & D4SCIENCE I & II (FP7), HEALTH-E-CHILD (FP6), PAPYRUS(FP7), OpenAIRE (FP7), e.nventory (FP7), Interact (FP7).
In the context of CHESS, NKUA with the Management of Data & Information Knowledge Group (MaDGIK) will participate in the user centric experience design and the adaptive story telling engine.

Prof. Yannis Ioannidis is currently a Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens. In early 2011 he also became the President and General Director of the ATHENA Research and Innovation Center. in addition, since April 2011, he serves as the Acting Director of the Institute of Language Speech Processing of ATHENA. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1982, his MSc in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1983, and his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1986. Immediately after that he joined the faculty of the Computer Sciences Department of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he became a Professor before finally leaving in 1999. His research interests include database and information systems, personalization and social networks, data infrastructures and digital libraries & repositories, scientific systems and workflows, eHealth systems, and human-computer interaction, topics on which he has published over on hundred articles in leading journals and conferences. He also holds three patents.

Dr Maria Roussou is an interaction designer and researcher, engaged in combining innovative technology with education and culture. For CHESS, Maria manages the User-Centred Design work. Besides CHESS, Maria has been teaching HCI as well as the Museums and New Technologies course of the Museum Studies graduate program at the University of Athens. She is also a founding director of makebelieve design & consulting (www.makebelieve.gr). Previously, she had established (in 1998) and directed (1998-2003) the Virtual Reality Department at the Foundation of the Hellenic World in Athens. She has also collaborated with many other museums including the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, USA. Maria holds a PhD in Computer Science (VR/HCI) from the University of London (University College London), a Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in Electronic Visualization and a MSc in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BSc from the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Natalia Manola is a Senior Software Engineer holding a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece, and an M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, USA. Her professional experience consists of several years of employment as a Software Engineer, Software Architect, Information Technology Administrator, and Information Technology Project Manager by companies in various Information Technology sectors in the US and Greece.

Dr. Manolis Tsangaris holds an M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Computer Sciences), and an Engineering Diploma Degree from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (ElectricalEngineering). He has served as a research director of the Bell Laboratories Research department in Athens Greece. Founder of the Silicon Valley startup "Athena Design Systems" and Systems Architect for Ammocore Technologies. Dr. Tsangaris specializes in the Architecture, Design, Prototyping, and Implementation of complex software systems, in the areas of distributed databases, distributed processing, and visualization.

Maria Vayanou is a Phd candidate in the department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens. She holds a Bachelor degree (2005) from department of Informatics, University of Piraeus, and a Master degree on “Advanced Computer Systems” (2008) from the department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens. Her research interests include personalization applications, user modeling, automatic extraction of preference profiles based on user behavior, query mining, behavior modeling, etc. She is a researcher in MaDgIK lab from 2007 and she has participated in the design and implementation of log mining and personalized applications to digital libraries, under the scope of European projects, funded by the European Union.

Manos Karvounis is a PhD candidate at the University of Athens, Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, where he also received his B.Sc. in Computer Science and M.Sc. on Advanced Information Systems. His research interests include recommender systems and personalization, opinion mining, and machine learning. He has been a researcher at MaDgIK lab since 2009 and has previously participated in the EU-funded projects DRIVER, OpenAIRE, and OpenAIREplus.
Nikos Begetis is a graduate student at the University of Athens, Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, studying Bioinformatics in the Master's Program "Information Technologies in Medicine and Biology". He has been a researcher at MaDgIK lab since 2012, working on CHESS personalization.
